Many quartets have been written for two violins, viola, and cello, starting with Haydn and continuing to the present. Mozart took over from Haydn, and Beethoven and Brahms perfected the art. Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Shostakovich have also provided outstanding examples. I will mention a string quartet that has an Iowa connection.

Written during the summer of 1893 in Spillville, Iowa. Members of my summer school class played the first two movements for us during the summer of 1995. The players were Carolyn Shih, violin, Maia Rutman, violin, Ellen Lee, viola, and Grace Lin (Ellen's roommate), cello.
