Fall 1999 ACM/GLCA Newberry Library Seminar

The “fringe benefits” of living in Chicago for a semester

Canterbury Courts, the apartments in which students will be housed, is located in one of the most desirable locations in the city.  It is two blocks from bus stops and a subway stop, and is within short walking distance from the Newberry Library, Michigan Ave. gold coast district and many fine restaurants.  In the early fall there is a wonderful farmer’s market on Saturday mornings located less than one block from Canterbury Courts.  It features fresh produce and flowers at reasonable prices.  Here is a list of some of the reasons to spend your semester in Chicago.  They are in no particular order.

Chicago is the most important and finest architectural city in the U. S.

Film series (featuring films other than the usual commercial fare), particularly those at The School of the Art Institute, The Fine Arts Building (Michigan Ave.), and The Music Box

Symphony Center at Orchestra Hall (one of the greatest orchestras in the world calls this place its home, chamber music series, soloists series)

Theatre (Chicago is second only to NY in its theatre, there are too many to begin to list here)

Jazz (there are many fine jazz clubs, our favorite is within walking distance and is no smoking!)

Major universities, especially University of Chicago and Northwestern, are important resources for the city
