Hobbies and Interests

Click here to see pictures of our lake house . Summer 2008: With partner Margaret I built a small sailboat!

Fiber Arts:  I enjoy weaving, knitting, and quilting items for friends and family.  My handwoven items have been shown at Cornell in a show for non-Art faculty, and at Iowa Arts Festival ArtWear '97 & 2002. Since 2001, I have participated in the Area Artists Studio Walk each year. Visit my new HOMEPAGE desbydiane.com.

Below are a few images of some weavings I am fond of: Royal Shakespeare Company actor Desmond Barrit wearing a green and white mohair sweater I made for him when he was directing Shakespeare at Cornell in 2001; a tapestry-woven chenille scarf; Margaret models a tapestry wrap; and my very first weaving evoking the slaughter of gays/lesbians in the Holocaust. WoodworkingI have been building furniture for many years, beginning with only basic handtools and gradually acquiring more skills.  My pieces range from small tables to full-size dining tables, loveseats, and desks.
Other Interests: I am a fan of murder mysteries, especially those set in academia and those that feature female detectives.  I also enjoy utopian fiction and have written articles and taught courses on feminist utopian novels.  I like to travel, relax with friends,  and surf the Web.
I also love my cats!
