Beethoven described this sonata, the ninth of ten, as "almost like a concerto", apparently for its grand scale, its length, and its demands on the performers. It was written for a young violinist who never deigned to play it.
The second and third violin sonatas, Opus 100 and Opus108, are also wonderful.
